Music Technology in Live Performance

Music technology can be used to describe anything audio related in technology, whether it be software, a MIDI contoller or maybe a piece of dedicated hardware. A variety of equipment have been used in live performance by numerous artists, some of which I will cover.

Maschine

Maschine is a unique instrument combining sequencer, sampler, multi-effects and a full blown integrated hardware controller into a simple system. It is created by Native Instruments who are a very well established company in the VST industry. The software runs in stand-alone or as a VST plugin (much like Native Instrument's "Kontakt". The hardware is a controller designed for Maschine, but can also be used as a general purpose MIDI controller. Darren Price (Underworld) shows a great example of how this software can be used in love performance in the above video.

Reason

Reason is a DAW (digital audio workstation) developed by Propellerhead Software. It emulates the rack of hardware synthesizers, samplers, signal processors, sequencers and mixers, all of which can be freely interconnected using the rack toggle feature. You can switch the view to the back of the rack so you can rewire the rack freely. Reason can be used as a complete virtual music studio, or can be rewired into a seperate sequence such as Cubase.

The above video shows The Bays explaining their use of Reason in a live situation. They use multiple sessions of the sampler in Reason and play thei own samples through it, effectively using Reason live.

Shure SM58

The legendary SM58 is an industry-standard, highly versatile cardioid dynamic vocal microphone, tailored to deliver clear vocal reproduction. The SM58 is consistently the first choice for vocal performances around the globe. It is an ideal choice for professional vocal artists in any live performance setting. It is tuned to accentuate the warmth and clarity of lead and backing vocals. Even in extreme conditions, the SM58 is made to target the main sound source and eliminate background noise.
